Although in the parish of Giggleswick, when first opened in 1850 this was the station for Settle. In 1876, after the construction of the Settle-Carlisle line, it was re-named Giggleswick. The village of Giggleswick is a mile away to the north, reached by an easy walk along Station Road (care must be taken crossing the busy A65 road). The ancient church of St Alkelda spans 1000 years Also of special interest is the chapel of Giggleswick School, built in 1897 in byzantine style. High above the main school buildings, its copper-covered dome is prominent in the local landscape, not least when seen from the railway.

The station is unstaffed, and tickets are purchased on the train. The original buildings have been replaced by a glass shelter on the Leeds-bound platform only - North Yorkshire County Council are hoping to provide one for the other platform, which is reached by a wooden crossing. There is a help-phone to the signal box for information about train running, and a public telephone across the large free car park. For people travelling in the Leeds direction, tickets for Settle and Giggleswick can be used to or from either station.
